How to analyze human voice in speech and singing ? The scientific tools and methods for fundamental research at disposal for clinical research on voice and their implications in speech therapy

Abstract

national hearing This article looks at the issue of human voice analysis in speaking and singing and presents the current approach implemented by scientists. Following a description of many exploratory techniques based on the fundamental levels of voice and speech production, such as breathing, phonation and articulation, a methodological reflection is proposed. The question of the possibilities and limits of measurement is discussed, as well as how these tools can be applied in a clinical context, in everyday orthophonic practice. Concrete cases illustrate how these tools are put into practice in the current context of scientific research into the production of voice spoken and sworn. Current approach driven by speech and voice scientists is presented. Separate assessment techniques are described, related to the foundations of voice and speech production: break, phonation, and articulation. The possibilities and limitations of the measuring tools are rejected, together with their application in clinical practice and in a daily speech therapy. Practical analyses illustrate the way these expert tools are currently applied in a scientific research approach of voice production in speech and Singing.
