Edme Boursault: between polemics and novel

Abstract

International audience This article examines the evolution of Edme Boursault (1638-1701), a writer born in Champagne, who had a successful career in Paris and Versailles. With the protection of patrons, connections with influential writers as Costar or Corneille, and regular custom of salons, he build his career practicing almost all genres: drama, fable, gazette, novel. First known for his polemical talent and his role as a witness, he then chooses to develop a serious moral reflection while evolving genres he practiced towards modernity. As he deserves to be given more interest than a minor writer.
