Education for democratic and intercultural citizenship in Colombia

Abstract

Colombians live together in a context characterised by ethnic and cultural diversity. However, local, regional and national identities are built in unfavourable conditions, particularly in the neighbourhoods of cities where more and more people and families displaced by violence are home. Most of this population belongs to ethnic groups such as indigenous and Afro-Colombian communities, who leave their territories, and often their culture, against their willingness to live in urban centres in miserable conditions. In this regard, education must play a leading and leading role in Colombia’s social transformation. School plays a major role in guiding the course of change into models of a fair, actively respectful and democratic society. This is where citizenship education has a raison d’être and need to work. Therefore, in this article, we have addressed the citizenship education required by Colombia, analysing the main conceptual dimensions underlying it, which prompted us to identify and underpin our model of education for democratic and intercultural citizenship, which seeks to enable people to develop attitudes, values and competences that enable them to live together in diverse contexts, in order to promote the construction of common community projects (at local and global level).
