Abstract

This contribution relates to the uses of ‘oh’ in interaction. This particle, generally classified as an interjection, has a variety of interactional uses, some of which have been highlighted in studies focusing mainly on English. Among these uses, the most common are those where ‘oh’ is used at the beginning of a speech tour in an exchange that was initiated by a question (‘oh’ marks the beginning of the answer) or by an assertion (‘oh’ marks the beginning of the second participant’s position). In our corpus, these listed uses are added to others that are less treated in the literature. They concern cases where ‘oh’ is used in a production that is not part of an exchange, but is presented as a ‘monologal’ tour, built by a single speaker. Analysis of these occurrences enables us to show, in accordance with the principles of interactional language, that ‘oh’ is used by the speaker in conjunction with other language and multimodal resources to format his turn according to the quality of his reception (recipient-design). ‘OH’ can thus be systematically described taking into account its operation in the interaction, and in particular the temporal and sequential configurations in which it participates in co-constructions observed in very diverse interactive situations.
