Community canteens are a social policy: Inclusion of canteens in state food intervention in Argentina

Abstract

In our country, the problem of access to food and meeting unmet food needs has been considered, for decades, to be central components of a number of public — state initiatives. 1. Within this framework, the emergence of community canteens in popular neighbourhoods is part of that history. Various territorial food assistance interventions, specific to civil society organisations, have been incorporated into the implementation and implementation of social programmes and policies. These various solidarity initiatives, self-generated by popular sectors and actors in the neighbourhood, have marked Argentina’s activation of these spaces known as community canteens, neighbourhood and children’s winters. For almost the last forty years, the implementation of various State assistance interventions, both in food and other programmes, has had its territorial basis in these areas, defining its own history within the social policy cycle (HINTZE, 1994; Andrenacci, 2005; Vacarissi, 2005; Chiara and Di Virgilio, 2009).
