From the right of correction to fight for the elimination of domestic violence

Abstract

Online Encyclopaedia Notice EHNEJusce in the 18th century, the human right of correction to his wife is legitimate. In Europe of the 20th century, male domination at the head of the family, enshrined in the Napoleonic Civil Code, goes hand in hand with a redefinition of virility, although legislation regulates or even condemns intimate partner violence. Less and less socially legitimate at the turn of the 20th century, it is increasingly contested, even though in practice it remains an ordinary violence that is difficult to eliminate. It is necessary to wait until the 1970s and the struggles of feminist movements before the European States and the European Union take up the problem by adopting laws to eradicate violence against women, while facing resistance.
