Blood in Spain

Abstract

Fascin blood. Still today, it has a burden of emotion and mystery, rooted in the old systems of representation, from the end of the Middle Ages to the 18th century. Old medicine places blood in the four humour system and makes it a real ‘life treasure’, associating it with the ‘minds’ — which are the interface between the soul and the corps-, at the heart, with emotions. Blood is also linked to gender and gender identity issues. Female blood is not the same as male blood. Menstrual blood, which is the subject of real mythology, is associated with dirt, waste and poison. But blood is also the basis for a food as essential as it is symbolic, milk, which is mentioned in speeches devoted to breastfeeding and choice of nursery. Blood is not only in the health field: its representation calls for key statements such as the relationship between the body and the soul, the definition and transmission of identity. It is involved in the construction of a genuine ‘haematological determinism’ — in which physical and moral characteristics are transmitted through sanging — in exclusionary practices, but also in rhetoric of tolerance and solidarity. This rapid reference to blood perceptions and challenges reveals the density and complexity of the associated representations. It is this old, but never forgotten, heritage that this book is intended to explore.
