Self-writing in Jean Starobinski’s work. Dialectic of subjective and objective, singular and universal

Abstract

A careful reading of Starobinski’s critical and philosophical rhetoric uncovers a subjectivity subdued with reflexive contemplation, that exists both in his interpretive and analytical discourses. Although it is never a case where the critic portrays his own personality, the reader can trace down identical thought-habits, predilections and convictions of Starobinski himself. In other words, self-portrayal is present in Starobinski’s reflections on 18th century philosophers, on 20th century writers and on studies of 19th century art and literature. It is as if Starobinski connects all the subjects he researches to his own self. Writing serves him not merely as a springboard for his own thought and critical commentaries, but also for edifying his own personality. Thus, another subject of my study is the explanation of the reason that motivates Starobinski to avoid introspection and to banish all critique of his identity. My purpose is to depict autobiographical markers left behind by Starobinski in his hermeneutic journey. Inspired by the critical approach of Michel Beaujour, I try to detect equivalences and correlations between Starobinski’s ethical writing and his contemporary life through the linkage between his interpretive discourse and his ethical orientation. Special attention is devoted to Starobinski’s rhetorical process, which conveys a structural model of his exercise of the intellect. My goal is to demonstrate how Starobinski’s texts, through dealing with philosophical and aesthetic questions, reveal distinguishable markers of a specific authorial identification, which can be applied both to the writer’s personality and thinking.
