Abstract
Taked between 1862 and 1863, the first photos by Militon Augusto de Azevedo are always evoked by documenting the old, precarious and lethargy of the city of São Paulo in the middle of the 19th century. However, my interpretation, based on reading the primary sources of the time, suggests a meaning that is substantially opposed to that. Between 1850 and 1860, the architecture and urban spaces of São Paulo were already undergoing significant upgrades, which appear in the photographs of Militon of Azevedo, which now belong to the acquis of the Paulist Museum and also of the Iconography and Museum Division of the Department of Patrimônio Histórico paulistano.
