Cattle breeding and the environment

Abstract

national hearing The article, focusing on the relationship between cattle farming and the environment, is part of the INRA’s collective expertise entitled ATEPE (Agriculture, Territory, Environment in European Policies). The authors first highlight the key elements of environmental diagnosis (water quality, emissions of pollutants into the air, landscape and biodiversity), while stressing the great diversity of production systems and the decisive role of livestock farming (milk and beef) in the occupation of the territory. The authors then look at the technical and economic factors that have influenced the current environmental situation. Lastly, the aim of a prospective discussion is to identify certain margins of manoeuvre in the field of agricultural techniques (or practices) and public policies (product prices, support mechanisms implemented under the CAP).
