Migration of young people entering the labour market in France: A comparison according to the level of qualification

Abstract

`titrebFrench youth’ migrations`/titrebThis paper compares migration profiles between low and high levels of education using French data. It is well known that most migrants are individuals with a high level of education ; nevertheless, we also observe geographical movements by less educated people in the first years of their professional life. These migrations are essentially motivated by professional motives, especially the need to find a job. Estimating migration equations separately for high and low education levels, we show that the main determinants of migration differ between levels : if there are few migrants among the less`np pagenum="372"/b educated, contrary to high educated levels, most of them move several times. They migrate when they face difficulties to find a job whereas the best educated do not need to use migration to find a stable job.Classification JEL : 12, J6.`np pagenum="356"/b
