Violence, conflict and war in the camps: Different approaches from the archaeological register of Chenque I

Abstract

Fil: Beron, Monica Alejandra. University of Buenos Aires. Faculty of Philosophy and Letras. “Juan B. Ambrosetti” Etnographic Museum; Argentina. National Council for Scientific and Technical Research. University of Buenos Aires. Institute for Cultures; Argentina One of the most salient aspects of the Chenque I site is the presence of material evidence of conflict at different scales. They have strong variability in different facets, from chronological to social. Some of these topics have been addressed in various work carried out by the team, which for 20 years has carried out research in this cemetery and in particular by the author of this chapter, who has identified this issue as a central issue of interest. However, the subject matter and its broad representation in this cemetery constantly opens up new edges, in relation to the possibility of new and different approaches and methods of analysis. This chapter summarises the different approaches developed, based on novel and unprecedented data, which allow interpretations of the scale of this phenomenon to be reached in two different periods of use of cemetery, pre- and post-hiate. Referring to theoretical and methodological aspects of violence in pre-state companies, reference is made to Beron (2014). This will address archaeological and historical aspects that contribute to understanding the spatial and temporal scales of the conflict represented in the southern Pampean region, but which have implications at macro-region level.
