The social space of World of Warcraft practices

Abstract

We would like to demonstrate in this chapter the scientific value that an “social space” approach to online games can have, taking the example of one of them, World of Warcraft, to do so. The aim here is to show, on the basis of a survey that combines quantitative and ethnography methods, that the world of gambling forms a relatively autonomous social space, which is the place of symbolic struggles between those involved, with the aim of defining legitimate practice. In this sense, there is an internal cultural hierarchy, similar in many respects to the broader cultural order, which combines legitimate and popular culture. First, it will be shown how the autonomy of the world of gambling is only relative, contrary to what is suggested by the widespread vision of the “magic circle”, and then how symbolic struggles take place in this space, before giving a concrete example of a social space approach by describing the current state of power relations in World of Warcraft.
