The linguistic landscape in the Basque Eurocity. Road signs in a multilingual and cross-border region

Abstract

This article analyses the linguistic landscape between Donostia and Bayonne. Working from a multidisciplinary perspective, based on sociolinguistic and ethnology, our research focused mainly on analysing road signs through multi-site fieldwork. Starting from the fact that there are currently different linguistic realities on both sides of the French-Spanish border, that is to say, in a multilingual context where Basque, Spanish and French coexist, with very different statuses, this research aims to update the various elements that come into play in the linguistic landscape, in particular the symbolic function of the signage of the linguistic landscape and the impact of different language policies on this subject.
