MAD movies and the fantastic screen: a story of French fantastic cinema prism in the specialist press (1977-1988)

Abstract

In line with cultural history and reception studies, this memory questions the history of French fantastic cinema through two specialist magazines: MAD Movies and the Fantastic screen. While it is often a question of a renewal of this cinema today, different periods of its history remain unknown and have hardly attracted the attention of academic research to date, the first of which is the extremely proliferating decades of popular cinema in the 1970s and 1980s. By studying the two reference journals linked to this cinepilic universe, we will seek to restore its identity by asking more specifically about the role and influence of the press on its development. How were films of French nationality of this kind received in Mad Movies and L’Fantastic Screen and can these periodicals be regarded as actors in the history of the fantastic hexagonal cinema? While tracing the history of these two journals, this research is intended to provide an analysis of their content and of the mechanisms they put in place between 1977 and 1988 in relation to the fantastic French cinema. With this work, we will sketch the contours of this kind of history and will seek to understand why it is ultimately so little known.
