The rime of the Ancient Mariner in the translations of Di Beppe Fenoglio and Mario Luzi

Abstract

After a brief contextualisation of Coleridge’s poetry and the translations of the Rime of the Ancient Mariner di Luzi (1949) and Fenoglio (1955) into Italian literary tradition, reference is made to the influence that the meeting with the English poet produced by Luzi and Fenoglio themselves. In the Fenoglio novels, the coleridgean text will be conveyed by the particular linguistic admixture between Italian and English; in the case of Luzi, on the other hand, although they have a linguistic impact, the solutions generated by the exercise on the foreign text will rather be a symbolic resource. This analysis closely links translation with the own production of the two Italian writers, highlighting how they intend to do so, also as a very useful resource to inspire and resolve personal technical and stylistic difficulties.
