Abstract
The province of Puerto Plata is considered the main tourist zone in the north of the country. Its productive apparatus include bovine cattle, tropical crops of high yields, fishing, elaborated products like chocolate, matches, hard liquors, tobacco, coffee and sugar cane. The last four are produced for exportation purposes.A hotel industry that booms from the seventies made possible the big improvement of its economy, drived the urban development, the commerce, the small and medium companies and the financial sectors, as well as the stablisment of air and sea lines, tele-phone services, travel agencies. Also an increasing sector of informal jobs is observed. Consequently it is inferred that the development of the tourism allowed an incipient process of creation of connections. This process must be deepened, without neglecting the encouragement of connections between the tourism and the productive sector of Puerto Plata. We must abandon the paradigm of simple constructing new hotels under the old idea of tourism of closed doors, isolated from the population.Taking as a premise that a flourishing and dynamic industry requires of dynamic su-rroundings we approach the study using the methodology od the diamond of competi-tiveness of Porter.
