Poverty rate: United States (2009)

Abstract

In 2009, the poverty rate in the United States was 14.3 per cent and reached almost 44 million people, an increase of 4 million people compared with the previous year. The poverty rate in the United States is calculated in absolute terms — the calculation of an expenditure basket below which an individual or a family becomes poor — which makes comparisons with most other countries using a relative poverty rate difficult.
