Strength and politics — Spinosa and women’s rights

Abstract

This text seeks to work on some meanings of the concept of body in Spinosa taking into account its physical, mental, metaphysical and political aspects. It also takes into account the dual condition of the body — as it exists in duration and as thought by God. The concept of ‘conatus’, which is present in all bodies, is a pretext for recalling the recent work of António Damásio, The strange Order of Things, and for comparing the individual strength of individuals with the political power that exists in societies. It is in this perspective that the way in which lobbyists perceive the condition of women is analysed. There is an attempt to understand the severity with which they perceive women’s actions in the political corps. The positions of some feminist losophers (Geneviève Lloyd, Moira Gaytens, Beth Lord and Margaret- Gullan Wuhr) critically appreciate their views. The text ends with the question “Women’s loor intellectualis Dei?”, arguing that in Book V of Ethics we find elements that ensure women’s life saving in their own right, without having to give up their body.
