The Gaulois in the course of the water. Acts of the 37th AFEAF International Colloquium

Abstract

International audience This book presents the proceedings of the 37th symposium of the AFEAF (French Association for the Study of the Iron Age), held in Montpellier from 8 to 11 May 2013. Co-organized by the AFEAF and the UMR 5140 Archeology of Mediterranean Societies, with the support of various partners, the conference was devoted to a single theme - water - including regional, national and European studies. The chronological period covers the whole Iron Age, from the eighth to the first century BC, including some communications regarding the end of the Bronze Age, within a geographical area from Britain to Baden-Württemberg and Pas-de-Calais to Catalonia. Six topics were discussed during the symposium in a series of papers presented in this volume and a series of posters whose volume is printed on demand: geo-archeology of the coasts and the wetlands in the Iron Age; settlements located along sea, lagoon or river banks; maritime and river roads ; water management and its specific facilities (wells, tanks, drainage ditches, ...); economic aspects with the water-related goods (salt, shells, gold); finally, the question of the links between water and the sacred (ritual and funerary practices).
