Body and canvas. The performances of feminist and labour protests at Santiago

Abstract

Summary: The analysis of social mobilisations in Chile has focused mainly on the rationalities, strategies and objectives of the protests. Although emerging, studies on performativities and protest bodies are still marginal. This article focuses on this, through a study of the feminist march of 8M and that of the first of May, classified and combative in 2019 in Santiago, Chile. Using an ethnographic approach, we focus on bodies, aesthetics and materialities deployed to observe the formances of the mobilisations, taking into account the complexity of the communication processes at stake in these instances. We argue that, while discourse is expressed heterogeneously in the corps, in terms of staff and politics, in demonstrations of a collective and centralised nature, this is expressed by canvas borne by homogenous bodies, demonstrating the emergence of the collective about personal experiences.
