Local knowledge in a situation: reverting to a multifaceted and dynamic concept

Abstract

In the light of studies carried out in eight different countries, the authors of this book observe that what is described as ‘local knowledge’ on natural resources and environments is inextricably linked to the contexts, practices or, more generally, the networks in which they operate. They are difficult to decrypt apart from the interventions of the various categories of actors who take over them. Various questions were raised: what kind of knowledge is involved? When is the concept of local knowledge used and by whom? To what extent are these knowledge redefined or even invented? The authors present a precise and detailed critical analysis of the concept of local knowledge and its various content. They show that, in addition to the semantic hesitations to designate it, the concept of ‘local knowledge’ is multi-faceted and is at least as political as cognitive in nature. This book is the result of discussions at a seminar on Traditional assets, the ongoing innovation organised by UMR Gred (Governance, Risk, Environment and Development). IRD, Paul Valéry Montpellier University 3). The case studies presented here concern eight countries or regions: Australia, Côte d’Ivoire, Madagascar, Mali, Morocco, Mexico, New Caledonia and Peru. The authors belong to four disciplines: economics, agronomy, sociology, anthropology and its subset, ethnoecology. The book is aimed specifically at the scientific communities in these disciplines and their students. The area addressed and the case studies may also involve decision-makers on environmental issues.
