Can demography explain the revolutions in the Arab world?

Abstract

this was one of the questions asked by Youssef Courbage, research director at INED and a specialist in the Arab world, on Thursday 6 October, as part of the cycle of learning of conferences organised by GREMMO in Lyon. In his view, there is no doubt that the demographic transition (which involves declining fertility) leads to the democratic transition: the control of births requires and leads to greater equality within the family (between husbands and women and between parents, etc.).
