Abstract

The conversion movement which led or brought back to the church many French writers of the end of the 19th century did not fail to delicate with the Catholic press and the ecclesiastical authorities those of them who had formed literally outside of the.Thus Huysmans, after unconsciously proclaimed in the epigraph of Modern Art that “any truth is right to say”, he found himself, once converted, in an interlactation of contradictions. At the same time he vehemently denounces, in the name of the integrity of the artistic work, the censorship by the ‘bedaudaille’ of literature and the calls to the Index against his novels, he sees his own work being systematically redacted in Catholic Pages (Stock, 1899) and Verlaine’s work, whose religious poesies he publishes (Messein, 1904). This study gathers the documents in this poorly known file, sets out the occasional reasons for an at least singular attitude and tries to understand the imaginary reasons for it.
