A Janus with two faces. Patrimonialisations of initiative-based religion and speeches of tradition in Gabon’s ‘traditional modern’ musiques

Abstract

From the 1960s to the 1990s, several singers in Gabon inherited a project to build a Gabonese and African identity that was decolonised as part of a process of shaping ‘traditions’ and ‘heritage’. They were then, consciously or otherwise, key players in the heritage of initiative-led societies and their recognition as a ‘tradition’ to be preserved.
