[International competition in the wine sector : what a future for the AOC model ?]

Abstract

also published in: Specification of Loria; 2002-02, 16 p. and reproduced in: Viniculture Day, 20644 and 20650, 2002 National audience The French model of wine-growing designations of origin (AOC) proved that it could encourage a particularly varied supply and maintain a large population of wine growers, with positive effects on employment and regional planning. However, the conditions for the long-term economic success of this model are demanding. Two major intertwined causes explain the limitations of this system, particularly in the generic AOC sector: firstly, the organisation of the wine markets between winegrowers and traders is often deficient. The resulting large variations in prices make it difficult to put in place incentive contracts to ensure that market makers supply programmable wine in terms of quantity and quality; secondly, the financial structure of the firms which have become the regional partners in AOC vineyards for placing on the market is not conducive to the development of branding strategies and own distribution networks. Following a detailed presentation of this diagnosis, operational proposals are made for a new economic organisation that promotes the participation of AOCs in concerted strategies with trading. This should improve the capacity of the European wine sector to maintain and develop its position at international level.
