The Freinet movement: from charismatic founder to collective intellectuals

Abstract

Elaboration just after World War I, the Freinet book jointly developed trends in New Education, the ambition of a popular education nurtured by 19th century ideologies and the desire for social change driven by the generation of former progressive and peaceful fighters. How can this pedagogy still be up to date, almost a century later, despite the social and cultural changes that took place during the period? The author shows how Célestin Freinet, the charismatic founder of this pedagogy, has also created the basis for a cooperative movement of teachers, a “collective intellectual” which, after generation, redevelops and implements the thinking and practices of emancipation at school (cooperation, free expression, education of work, experimental testing, personalisation of learning, etc.). Using the same approach based on sociology and historical sociology, Henri Peyronie asked another important issue — too little studied — of educational practices, and ignored the prevailing culture of evaluation: what are the social and human effects of this alternative educational practice carried out by the Freinet movement of the Modern School?
