The renewal of the ancient heritage in the iconography of the French royal festivals in the 16th century

Abstract

In the ephemeral art of the party, specifically the Royal Mascarades in France in the 16th century, the return to ancient times is recurrent. The drawings of the festive costumes that have reached us are the ideal means of understanding the different axes that allow an analysis of how the ancient cultural tradition (mythological figures) can be transposed into a festive, symbolic, festive and political fashion. In addition, this reownership of the ancient heritage and its embezzlement marred new themes and characters created by the exploratory trips — Brazilian exotism and tradition of the old world. Taking the example of one or two festivals where written sources and drawings are available, we will analyse how the World Day could be a continuous thematic renewal whose formal and semantic variations were perceived by the Court’s characters and ambassadors.
