“The night just before forests” by Bernard-Marie Koltès: the space and time of exclusion

Abstract

The absence of generic references (such as ‘novel’ or ‘theatre’) to the ‘Nuit just before the forest’ threshold allows us to adopt the posture of a naïve reader; he ignores that “La Nuit just before the forest” is a text written for the scene. The feeling of deep strangeness created by this text is then understood by the difficulty of mentally portraying events or situations depicted there. It is caused by a specific use of the spatial and temporal indications, present from the title, which play on the two axes of representation, space and time. The reference desanitation gives the word a general and symbolic scope. “The Nuit just before forests” means a double exclusion: excluded from working time, dispossessed of moments that make sense in connection with the latter, such as ‘Friday evening’, the person is unable to control the temporal organisation of his speech, can only reformulate the tear between one front and one after; excluded from the world of men, he is a foreigner who is a perpetual victim of the ‘Salauds’ who live in a hostile world. The desire for complete and repairing communication with a brother or a double must not overlook the obstacles posed by the absence of a home, and above all by the silence of the interviewee. This speech, which is subject to a double temporal and spatial exclusion, is thus referred to an immeasurable and tragic loneliness.
