Space in econometric land use models: methodological challenges and empirical applications

Abstract

Land use and land use change is one of the main pressures of humans on the environment. Some land use changes such as deforestation or conversion of permanent pastures may have adverse effects on the environment such as the decline in biodiversity, release of carbon into the atmosphere, and alteration of water cycles . Given their environmental impacts, a better understanding of the determinants land use and land use change is of great importance for assessing the effects of public policies. It is therefore important to develop econometric modeling tools, integrating trade-offs between different land uses. These tools allow firstly to analyze the determinants of changes in land use between crops, forests, grasslands, and urban use, and secondly, to study the implications for the environment under different future scenarios. This survey show how the methodological advances in spatial econometrics in recent years have improved the quality of econometric models to estimate the determinants of changes in land use but also to have accurate predictions of future land uses.
