health communication and local languages in Wê and Dan contries in Côte d'Ivoire

Abstract

Côte d’Ivoire, along with the other African countries, still faces huge health problems. So, to combat them and provide at the same time quality health care and affordable to the population, the State has taken measures and has undertaken all-out awareness campaigns. The disparity between the languages chosen to convey information, the absence of captivating communication, the lack of effective communication, the failure to take account of the beliefs of the populations and the lack of efficient choice for media plan are, however, the many evils which weaken the health communication device in Côte d’Ivoire. In a situation like this, the populations adopt attitudes that make them more vulnerable to diseases and they have recourse to several therapeutic ways to solve their health problem. The study found an extremely significant relationship between the intention of changing the way they behave and the language used to speak to the populations in the dissemination of health information. By watching some areas of our investigation (the departments of Facobly, Kouibly and Danané), we indeed noticed an influence of local languages (Dan and Wê) on health communication in those areas. The study also shows that the initiators themselves do not put into practice what has been adopted. Furthermore, the analysis of the socio-cultural characteristics of the populations, teaches us the necessity of taking into account, and as a priority the social values internalized by the populations concerned with the implementation of projects in the area of health communication.
