Ajami script for the Mande languages

Abstract

Arabic-based (Ajami) writing has been used for Mande languages, most probably, since the times of the Ancient Mali (13-16 centuries). It is still in use among Mandinka in Senegal, Gambia and Guinea Bissau, among Susu and Mogofin in Guinea, and to a lesser extent among Bamana in Mali. Specific features of several Manding Ajami varieties are discussed.
