The approach of this article is placed on the relationship between urbanisation and the management of natural resources. It is based on a case study, describes the urban growth trends of eight municipalities that make up the average basin of the Haiquila river and relates these trends to its socio-environmental problem. Based on the analysis of the case study, the article concludes with general conclusions on sustainable regional development.
