Etty Hillesum or the spiritual itinerary of a young woman in the middle of a historical disaster

Abstract

‘titrebSummary’/titreb. It is only in 1941, about two years before her death in 1943, that Etty Hillesum decided to write a journal in order to get to know each other better. This decision followed his meeting with Julius Spier, a mature man who had become a Jungian training therapist and who had been a refugee in the Netherlands. Spier makes him read the Bible and conveys it to God. What surprisingly and frightened is the depth of the transformation that takes place in such a short time. Everything goes as if the historical circumstances and the distress that abated those, like Jews, she tried to help Westerbork, before leaving herself (and her own) to Auschwitz’s extermination camp, had led her, nevertheless, to ripen in the fertile soil of her being, and in great haste, the love of God and the next one, as well as the feeling of gratitude for the beauty of creation. His testimony, which is not confined to a specific religious confession, is a powerful invitation to the widest opening of our hearts in the author of life God of love.
