Abstract
International audience In the 17th century there emerged a critical discourse about the novel, an empty slot for theoretical poetics until then, as well as the locus for the elaboration of more or less novel forms of practice and poetics. Lacking in authority, in legitimate references, and in codification prior to the texts from the 16th century that deal with it, the novel is an object of quasi-permanent scorn on the part of contemporary erudites and other literary authorities. As a reaction to this criticism, which is actually a condemnation, a reflexion about the novel developed, whose nature was first apologetic before becoming more independent and grounded in poetics. This form of criticism no longer really wants to edict rules or answer attacks: it no longer considers the legitimacy of the genre, but looks at the success or failures of the work it is commenting on.
