The effects of Parkinson’s disease on handwriting

Abstract

This article presents the characteristics of a person with Parkinson’s disease and the influence of treatment of the disease on these characteristics. The expert is thus required to gain a better understanding of this source of variation in writing, and is intended to help him assess the results of his observations when dealing with a case involving parkinsonic entries. Since imitated entries may have characteristics similar to those of pathological entries, it is important to know the signs which distinguish them. The writing of parkinsonians may, in particular, show a reduction in the size of the letters, known as ‘micrography’, scraps and indistinct shapes of letters, and a wavulatory alignment of words. Parkinsonians write less quickly and with reduced acceleration and fluidity. They tend to increase the duration of the execution of their traits. Treatment with medicines or Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) can enable parkinsonians to improve their performance and achieve partial restoration of sequential movement execution.
