Where these data come from
Changes in Holocene vegetation in Lake du Ledro (Trentino, Italy).

Abstract

oral presentation In the context of the ANR LAMA project coordinated by Mr Magny and N. Combourieu-Nebout, we present palynological analyses of the deep carrot taken in Lake du Ledro (Trentino, Italy). This lake, with a water catchment area of 48 km², is to the south of the Alps at an altitude of 650 m. The carrot has been identified in a sector that is not disturbed by seismium-reflection. The age model established on or after 13 14C dates validates pollen registration at a time resolution less than the century (63 years). The available palynological data now cover all Holocene. They show the successive appearance of the known vegetation corte on the southern slope of the Alps. In the first half of Holocene, abrupt climate change occurs in vegetation, geophysics and elementary chemistry and corresponds to fluctuations of 18O in the Greenlandic ice cap (GISP2). The cooling of the Preboreal Oscillation (PBO) and the 8 200 cal BP event are marked by the halting of forest expansion at the beginning of Holocene and the integration of the fir tree into local ecosystems. In the second half of Holocene, two marked declines in the rate of Arborreal pollen together with continuous occurrences of human pollen (cereals and anthropogenic indicator taxa) are observed and confirmed by increased soil erosion (magnetic susceptibility). They record the installation, in two successive stages, of human occupations at the age of average Bronze and then at the age of Fer. These two phases are separated by a phase of agricultural removal and forest recolonisation which is not explained by climate oscillation (GISP2). Flood events are revealed by sedimentary figures and high Zirconium values. The age model and pollen data are discussed again after removing these instantaneous events from the sedimentary sequence.
