Abstract

'pbL the child and the image, the association seems so natural that we are happy to forget to consider the very origin of the images children have in their hands. However, for a long time, the ‘small people’ watched over the shoulders of adults. In France, therefore, the second half of span class = ‘petitecap’ bxix’supbe’/supb century must be waited for the illustration to take account of the requirements of this specific public. Technical progress in printing and the sensitivity of an exceptional publisher: P.J. Hetzel, the ‘ibBook of children’/ib is then fiercely showing its destination and becomes ‘ibpar kids’/ib. ‘/PB’ pbThe image now changes status. It is no longer merely a decorative support for the text, it gives a figurative reading of it, subject to a twofold imperative: educational and aesthetic. It is therefore up to talented artists, encouraged by passionate publishers, to find the most readable forms that are best suited to the childhood feelings of each era. What artistic currents inspire the choice of their style? What creative inventions have enabled them to transform the visual space of the book? How have some illustrators managed to create graphic literature, which is now regarded as a true golden age? ‘/PB ‘pb’ible small French figures’/ib show the history of these astonishing metamorphosis, which characterises the publication of the book for children in France, between 1860 and 1940.’/PB
