The dual reality of the sports world

Abstract

National audience The unprecedented engagement for sport is increasingly being invested, both financially and politically and symbolic. A major media celebration of globalisation, the latest football World Cup in South Africa once again revealed the dual reality of sport: on the one hand, the actual event (the sporting competition stricto sensu) and, on the other hand, the symbolic event, that is to say all the performances of a show shown by the media. The sport model, which tends to become progressively established, is based on the more direct economic nature of sport: moving away from the principles of popular education, sports organisations (clubs, leisure associations, municipal sports facilities) are turning into services which they have to provide to users and consumers, while, at the same time, as a result of the privatisation of televisions and the emergence of sports sponsorship, performing sport (in particular football) is aligned with the dominant neoliberal model in Europe. This dossier seeks to bring together a few dissenting voices, which find it difficult to be heard in this widespread and widespread media orchestration of the virtues of sport, in order to highlight less well-known aspects of the reality of sport: the world of sport is still highly hierarchical, especially when there are strong challenges; “Europe of Sport” is a commodity; shadow sports workers are increasingly exploited and insecure; by imposing its standards and the principle of effectiveness on the regional sports leagues and committees, the entrepreneur state creates a new culture of result; the “integrative” virtues of sport are far from being proven, while sport continues to generate in the shadow exclusion, racism and violence.
