Migration of older adults back to Mexico: social media, family and accumulation of disadvantages

Abstract

The return of older adults to Mexico is still a little explored topic in the literature on migration. This article presents a discussion on some studies that have addressed the situation of older adults on return; beyond the idea of a migrant returning in retirement or older age, who ended his working life in the United States and returns to retirement with some form of pension, there is another type of return of older adults in precarious and austerity conditions, causing an accumulation of disadvantages and hampering labour and economic integration. Family and social networks play a key role in the social integration of these returnees and also in addressing, to some extent, some of the shortcomings they face. There is also a reflection on the lack of public policies targeting this population.
