How to manage the return to work after an absence due to a mental health problem?

Abstract

`titrebManaging the return to work following leave due a mental health problem`/titrebMental health problems are increasingly responsible for disability leave in the workplace. This situation raises the challenge of reintegrating employees returning to work following leave due to this type of problem. In order to help both employers and managers, this article emphasizes the importance of educating, training and raising the awareness of their personnel in matters of mental health in order to help them intervene more effectively and prevent mental health problems by ensuring the well-being of employees. But how should the return to work be managed? It is important to process claims or requests for disability benefits and to follow up on these claims, to communicate with the employee in order to maintain the employment relationship for the duration of the disability, to accommodate the employee and to allow for a progressive return to work, to prepare employees and their colleagues for the return, to review the work context, conditions and organization, and, finally, to monitor the employee following the return to work. These conditions of success are illustrated by means of actual situations faced within a large Canadian company.
