Mobile language learning based on pedagogical criteria

Abstract

MALL (Mobile Assisted Language Learning) provides a vast amount of language learning applications. In this context, it is necessary that the threefold process of analysis, evaluation and application development of MALL resources meets two fundamental premises. First, it should be carried out based on educational criteria specific of language learning. Second, it must be based on theoretical models that consider the teaching and learning of languages. This work is part of a broader research that suggests a methodology for the analysis, evaluation and development of educational mobile applications for language learning, based on the two abovementioned requirements. This paper presents two results of that broader research, consisting of the proposal of a theoretical model for MALL, on the one hand, and the creation of a template or rubric to facilitate the analysis, evaluation and development of specific applications for MALL. First, a theoretical model for MALL is proposed. Then, a template is developed that incorporates observable parameters used for the description, evaluation and development of educational resources for language learning assisted by mobile technologies.
