Defining the expectations of urban seating users in terms of sunshine

Abstract

This work is part of the MERUBBI project: Method of exploiting the Utile Resources of the Bioclimatic Building in its Ilot. The aim is to enable the rational construction of new buildings, based on two pillars: bioclimatic principles and insulation principles. We are looking at the first one, and in particular the solar dimension. In this research we look at the shade of urban squares. The aim is to identify the criteria used by users to define the quality of a space’s sunshine. In the longer term, the aim is to prepare the ground for possible regulations on space solar access, in line with building regulations. While our main concern is the light dimension of the sun, we are well aware that it is inextricably linked to the thermal dimension. After presenting the context of the research, and in particular the MERUBBI project of which it is part, we discuss the state of the art, which focuses on various aspects related to our study: solar access, light ambient issues, light effects, regulation and investigative devices. We then reflect on the method that can allow us to identify users’ expectations regarding sunshine. We opt for the random quantitative survey, in order to gather their views directly. The questionnaire put in place is essentially based on simple iconographic analyses (based on preformed questions) of grey plots for photographs of urban squares. The survey is conducted in Nantes in June 2017. Several parameters vary according to the photos, and we try to identify by statistical methods possible correlations between user scores and these parameters. In this work we present the limitations of this method and the biases involved in the evaluation of the photos. This work is not seen as a clear answer, but as an attempt to interpret the views of residents on a complex subject. After the examination of our survey, we draw the following results: the user is looking for the sun in winter, and the shade in summer. The sunshine of the facades is appreciated by users. These results are a step in the creation of indicators that can be used for the evaluation and regulation of the solar aspect in urban squares. This work reflects the concerns of users on the subject.
