Abstract
In 1937-38, Kracauer analysed the political system of National Socialism in his text Totali-tarian Propaganda. He claimed that his system was based on the creation and dissemination of an unreal image, that of a homogeneous community of the people. This beautiful ap-pearance masks a nihilistic will to power. In later texts, Kracauer elaborates on this analysis by studying Nazi film newsreels in the context of a reflection on the cinematic medium. The cinematic image may be temporarily used to conceal reality, but, according to Kracauer, it is also a response to fascism and allows one to reconnect with reality.
