Abstract
`titrebCan Love be Sublimated `/titreb Basing our reasonings on a redefinition of the notion of sublimation founded on sublimation being a process of sublimation ‘through the intermediary of the Ego’, this article underlines the necessity for us to go beyond early Freudian formulations of sublimation and to analyse the topical functioning of sublimation in the inter-connections between the Ego, Super-Ego and the Ego-Ideal. The model of humour and the reconstruction of the Ego within the Ego that this makes possible is our paradigm here. The sublimation of love is then not to be considered as renouncing drives but as an extension of the aim of desire the object of which is characterised by the fact that it is the cause of happiness. But this object is infinite in nature, bringing us back to traces that are archaic, unnamed and impossible to represent save through this feeling of happiness itself and beyond this to a long-preserved enigma that is present in the appearances of things.
