Noctambulism measurement

Abstract

Labex FutursUrbains — GT MUP: seminar on “Measurement of walking” I will try here to highlight the questions posed to me by the measurement of noctambulism, in my work as a PhD thesis in urban socio-anthropology. I look at the noctambulism, a festive nightlight which publicises the urban space of metropolitan cities (Paris, Madrid), how they are structured and how they are managed by the public authorities. This is a route linked to specific “urban” issues due to the density of walkers and urban attractions (furniture, etc.). Moreover, this walking is night-time, i.e. with a different shape and content of the daytime walk, in terms of corpority, structuring, detemporality, territorialisation and objective. It is done routinely or is articulated with the more or less formal organisation of an ‘event’. It can thus be moved, deambulation or break, waiting. It should be noted that the elements of the sensitive context are specific at night, which leads to particular inclinations to walking, linked to socio-cultural representations of this time spacing. Finally, this promenade has a style geared towards/by festivity, i.e. certain values and norms. It should also be noted that this is mainly a collective practice, and therefore a walk ‘with’; individual noctambulism is more rarer. The question here is: how to measure the practice of noctambulism, i.e. how to quantify the structure of noctambulism, through concrete questions such as: what is the number of practicers, how long does the practice last depending on the location/seasons/..., how long will it take, how many places are visited, etc.? This also raises the question of whether this practice should be quantified or not.
