Closer to the Visuas debates in Santiago de Cali. A press study, 1849-1850

Abstract

The aim of this article is to show the opinion and controversy created by the arrival of the Jesús Company in Santiago de Cali, expressed in articles published in the daily newspapers El Sentimiento Democrática and El Ariete. The text explains how the religious presence of the jesuitas served to fuel the conflict between liberal and conservative parties in 1849 and 1850. The author contextualised the problem on the basis of the various political trends and the role of the Order, which manifest themselves during the liberal government of José Hilario López. In particular the fears of the liberal sectors about the impact of the Company on politics, neogranadine education and society at large. The role and position of conservatives in defending religions and with regard to the liberal reforms of the time. Finally, the role of family parents with regard to the presence of the jesuitas and their complaint concerning the management of the College of Santa librada in Santiago de Calí and the reaction of some democratic societies and liberal sectors in the locality were explained.
