Fon people and Catholic minority in Dahomey : a comparative look of christianization in the colonial and postcolonial context 1946-1972

Abstract

The missionary fact is, in many ways, an excellent prism to address the evolution of societies. It helps to highlight the methods of evangelization, the meeting points, but also the distances between actors of proselytism and indigenous societies. In contact with otherness, apostolic dynamics become multifaceted, complex and go far beyond the missionaries’ evangelizing task.Christianization is thus perceived as a game of reciprocal influences between those who bring the Gospel, but also those who receive it. The study of the evangelization of the Fonpeople of Dahomey by the Society of African Missions between 1946 and 1972 is part of this dialectic. This work seeks to highlight the interaction dynamics at the heart of the meeting of missionaries with the Fonpeople, the conversion routes proposed by the SMA Fathers, and the responses given by the local societies. Moreover, in the decolonization and postcolonial period, the Catholic Mission remains strongly involved in socio-political issues of the country. In this context, the analysis of the apostolicprocess, considered as a total social phenomenon, gives through our study, an opportunity to grasp all the religious, social, political and cultural transformations that the Dahomean society has to face.
