“Go to Autrement” the promotion of tomorrow’s guides: Guide... but not just!

Abstract

The planet is currently facing a profound environmental challenge, resulting from the indiscriminate use of available natural resources, in favour of economic growth. Due to its vulnerability, the mountain is one of the geographic areas already strongly impacted by climate change. The repercussions are serious; with the decrease of glaciers and the permafrost which are more and more frequent, the sports practices in high mountains are found modified (Salim, Mourey, Ravanel, Picco, Gauchon, 2019). Mountain tourism is characterized by numerous uncertainties and structural crisis factors expressed by climate change (Bourdeau, 2013). As alpinism has been the heart of the guide activities, in the coming days they may face an identity crisis, but if climate change is and will be a constraint, it can also represent a way to reinvent the way of mountaineering. Therefore, the Project “Guide Sentinel” of the environment committee of the SNGM aimed to find the identity of the “mountains guides of tomorrow”. More than a Risk Management Sentinel, their identity is recognized as a protector of the mountains and of the mountain culture. In partnership with ENSA and APRIAM this Project will recreate the training of mountain guides : wouldn’t it be a good way to inspire the new generations and to encourage this new identity in which all guides can be “sentinel” if they are committed to the environment and mountain culture?!
