Plague in the consuls ceremonies. Presentation, editing and commentary of a 1720-1723 plague relationship

Abstract

Summary: a ‘relationship’ of the 1720-1722 plague is kept in the ‘ceremonial’ of the Montpellier consuls. This insertion may seem surprising in the light of most of the texts contained in the register, especially since the epidemic has spared the city. The written and archived presentation of this consular narrative serves essentially three things. On the one hand, this ‘relationship’ makes it possible to keep memory of the health measures taken during the episode of plague in anticipation of a possible return from the epidemic. On the other hand, the narrative makes it possible to record the distribution of roles between the Municipality and the Governor in the fight against the epidemic, giving the authority alone the most restrictive decisions, in particular the closure of the city. Finally, this handwritten text serves as a pre-writing of the history of the fight against the outbreak of the plague in Montpellier, most of which are taken up by Charles d’Aigrefeuille in his history of the city of Montpellier, of which it is the main source. We publish the full text from the ceremonies here.
